ABSTRACT
Solving the problems of designing a structure while keeping costs reasonable are part of the routine for a mechanical engineer. By using intuition and expertise, an engineer can quickly come up with a solution, but these solutions are often rooted in assumptions and previous solutions of other designers. By utilizing a multivariable optimization approach, there is the possibility to find the optimal solution for the problem based on framework conditions instead of assumptions. Framework conditions are the objective functions, which can be the load case, expected lifetime, available materials, manufacturing method and allocated budget.
